Aberdare Safari, Aberdare National Park Kenya Africa
Aberdare Safari tours and travel offers you and your family something quite unique: with a mountain range running through the Aberdares you'll find moorland, ice-cold streams and thick forests. This mountainous area has been described as 'Scotland with Lions'. Despite its altitude and thick vegetation the Aberdares is not without its safari attractions and is home to most of Kenya’s wildlife, including the endangered Black Rhino. As the Aberdares mountain range slopes off to the east you'll find the well-known safari lodges, The Ark hotel and Treetops hotel .These hotels in aberdare are also one of the main attractions of the Aberdares as both are built above the ground beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. Elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and bushbuck are regular visitors to the waterholes at night. This area was put on the tourist map in 1950 when Princess Elizabeth became Queen of England while she was on safari in the Aberdares.

The National Park in Kenya is part of the Aberdaresmountain ranges; the mountain range slopes on the western side of the wall, adjacent to the Rift Valley and is 180 kilometers from Nairobi. The national park covers an area of 767 square kilometers and features a wide variety of wildlife like the lion, leopard, baboon, black and white Colobus monkey and Sykes monkey. Soils are red and of volcanic origin, but rich in organic matter and the topography is diverse with deep ravines that cut through the forested eastern and western slopes and there are many clear streams and waterfalls. The National Park lies mainly above the tree line running along the 10,000ft contour with some forest and scrub at lower altitude in the 'salient' area near Nyeri with the boundary running down to the 7000ft contour. The other attractions include: The Kimathi Hideout, Night viewing of wildlife at the Ark and Treetops, Lesatima peak, Kinangop peak, waterfalls, and walks in the moorlands, Twin hills, Elephant hills and Table Mountains. By road, the park is readily accessible on tarmac from Nyeri and Naro Moru on the eastern side. The main towns from which the park can be approached are Nyeri (154 km from Nairobi) Nyahururu (188 km from Nairobi) and Naivasha (87 km from Nairobi). By Air, the park can be accessed using the Mweiga Airstrip, next to the park headquarters or Nyeri Airstrip which is 12 km from Mweiga headquarters.

Crossing the Aberdare Mountains is an unpredictable event since rain is both frequent and heavy. The highest point of the range is Ol Donyo Satima, which means the mountain of the young bull in Maa, the language of the Maasai, which reaches 3998 meters. There is a road that traverses the mountains from Naivasha to Nyeri which can be handled by a sturdy car in good weather. At its maximum elevation the road passes through misty moorlands at about 3350 meters, where strange six meter tall mutants of alpine plants: groundsel, erica, hypericum, lobelia and sennecio - grow in profusion. Icy rivers plunge in glorious cascades and spectacular waterfalls. The salient, which thrusts a dense forest through rich farmland, is where both Treetops and the Ark are situated. The Salient's origin lies in an elephant migration route between the two mountains. The forest is rich in wildlife; elephant and rhino, warthog, bush pig and giant forest hog, waterbuck, duiker, suni, dikdik, bongo and reedbuck are all to be seen.  Birds are not only dazzling but also plentiful. The crowned eagle (which eats monkeys) is everywhere and the forest echoes to the shrill cries of the Silvery-cheeked hornbill. The resplendent sunbirds are well represented, among them the brilliant metallic violet Tacazze, the emerald green Malachite Sunbird and on the moorlands the Scarlet tufted Malachite Sunbird, with its very long slender tail. The number of visitors to the Aberdares National Park is high in the park rankings but this is because of the Ark and Treetops. The park itself is still very much under-visited despite its grandeur and its powerful vistas.

To enter the park (adult/child; US$ 40/ smartcard required)through the treetops or arc gates, ask permission at national park headquarters(Tel 0612055024; Mweiga, 22,Nyeri)the headquarters ,between Mweiga and Nyeri on the B5 sells the KWS Smartcard and excellent 1:25,000 maps (Ksh 450).map proceeds go to the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust.  KWS currently advises against trekking in the salient, as he dense cover does make walking dangerous for visitors, but the high moorland and four main peaks (all 3500m to 4000m) are excellent trekking spots. As is the case on Mt Kenya, heavy rain can arrive at any time, so you must be prepared. Mud and reduced visibility are two good reasons not to trek during the heavy rains (from March to May). You’ll need advance permission from the warden at park headquarters, who’ll provide an armed ranger (Ksh 1000 per day) to guide you and protect you against inquisitive wildlife. Trout fishing is very popular ,especially high up on the moors ,but requires a permit from park headquarters (Ksh 100) kiagondoro fishing lodge makes a good base and the Chania river is great for brown trout ,but watch your back-there are tales of fishers being stalked by lions! Lions or not, best get an armed ranger to escort you. Other activities that can be carried out in the park include camping. Kindly note that there are lions here and the thick forest bush means you can be extremely close to one without having an idea.
