Strictly for the more adventurous and miles from anywhere, Katavi National Park is one of the wildest places on earth. This vast, untamed landscape is Africa's great outdoors as it was created. Even for old safari hands the unrestricted game drives and bushwalks in Katavi will come as an astonishing revelation.

Since it first pitched the guy ropes ten years ago, Chada Katavi has evolved into a rather civilised affair. Come dinnertime the mess is nothing short of splendid. Hidden in the trees that flank it are six guest tents, with fine wooden furniture, large comfortable beds spread with crisp white Egyptian cotton and floors covered with thick woven rugs. The tents are large, romantic and airy and each one offers a bathroom set just behind.

Although supremely comfortable, the camp neither intrudes upon nor detracts from the majesty of the place itself. Game is literally everywhere, including in the camp itself. There are huge herds of elephant, pods of yawning hippo, thousands of buffalo, hyena, crocodile, leopard and lion as well as rarities such as puku, sable and Roan Antelope.
