Kusini Camp
Kusini Camp Old Sign Board
Kusini Camp is a luxury safari tented camp located in the South Central area of the Serengeti National Park Tanzania. The Serengeti covers more than 14,763 sq. kilometers, making it one of the world’s largest wildlife sanctuaries. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai language meaning, “endless plains”.

Part of Kusini’s charm is its remote and private location within the Serengeti National Park borders. With no other safari tented camp, lodge or hotel in the near vicinity, Kusini Camp offers exceptional and essentially private game viewing.

Perfectly situated in a cluster of kopjes, Kusini Camp hotel is a permanent tented camp, blended seamlessly into the delicate environment of the predator-rich plains of the Serengeti. The surrounding short grass plains provide the setting for the most spectacular natural phenomenon in the continent of Africa, the great annual wildebeest migration, during which time the hordes amass around the camp for the

birthing of their young. The migration comes with its own retinue, and the predators - lion, leopard and cheetah – plus countless zebra, gazelle and other plains game add to a diverse eco-system that evolves around you during your stay. Perhaps surprisingly, Camp Kusini sits exclusively in this remote region of the Serengeti, affording guests the rare opportunity for secluded game drives well away from the principle tourist circuit. Kusini's expert tour guides enhance your stay by sharing their knowledge and experience gleaned during a lifetime in the bush.

The area around Camp Kusini is noted for its lion and cheetah populations as well as excellent leopard sightings. Game viewing is superb throughout the year as there are large resident populations of predators, giraffe, buffalo and other plains game in the area immediately surrounding. Kusini Camp commonly referred to as Kusini Tented Lodge simply offers the finest accommodations in the Southern Serengeti. The lodge provides for an authentic, under canvas experience while at the same time delivering luxury hotel facilities and extraordinary service. Kusini Camp is run by a friendly couple from Zimbabwe, Fred and Carol Rademeyer who have spent over twenty years running various lodges and camps in Africa.

Their attention to fine details, wealth of knowledge and deep love for ‘the bush’ sets the stage for unparalleled service and a truly remarkable lodge. Kusini Camp is certainly very expensive (especially in the High season) but the lodge is first class and you will undoubtedly be rewarded with one of the most intimate and authentic experiences available in Africa. Kusini Camp is a great choice for that seeking true luxury accommodation in the green season from December through May when the great migratory herds are grazing on the nearby plains. We highly recommend two nights at Kusini Camp during this time if you do choose to incorporate luxury lodges into your Tanzania safari itinerary. During the dry season, game viewing is still good as the immediate area around the camp does support fair numbers of resident animals including elephant, buffalo and impala.

Lantern Ourdoors Dinner Kusini Camp
There are two resident lion prides in the immediate area (one to the west and one just east of the lodge). However, there are much better areas for game viewing in the Serengeti during the dry season and a one or two night stay is only advisable on longer duration luxury safaris. Other lodges and camps in the Central, Western or Northern Serengeti are a better choice during the dry season if game viewing is a priority.

A stay at the Kusini Camp is usually incorporated into our fly safari and drive back itineraries after exploring the predator rich Central Serengeti and before continuing on to Ndutu, Olduvai or the Ngorongoro Crater. Typically, you will be heading south down the long grass plains of the Serengeti from the Seronera area.  You will continue through a remote area called the Moru Kopjes, which is home to the remaining population of black rhinos in the Serengeti before arriving into camp.
Kusini Camp is a very good luxury tented camp in the far south of the Serengeti. Far

from any other lodges, Kusini feels secluded at all but the busiest times of year. The camp is located in the south western area of the Serengeti National Park, close to the border with Maswa Game Reserve to the south and the Ngorongoro conservation area to the east. It's about 1 hr 20 minutes flight from Arusha and a 3 to 4 hour drive from Ngorongoro Crater and Highlands; initially down the hideous corrugated and traffic filled road that connects Ngorongoro and Olduvai, but subsequently across vast open plains. Much of the charm of Kusini is its remoteness.  In its own little pocket of this paradise, Kusini has been referred to as "your own private Serengeti."

Kusini Camp just like all of Tanzania will always hold a special place in your hearts, arriving at Kusini Camp in the evening after being on the road for long, you are tired and dusty, however you are greeted by the lovely Zimbabwean couple that run the place and escorted to a brief check in and then your tent. To your surprise they set up a private candlelight dinner and what a dinner it is, three courses, champagne, wine, you name it you have it. The tents, they are top notch, extremely comfortable bed, wonderful shower and all the amenities one would expect at a five star hotel.

The grounds are spread out so the tents are not close to each other, which is nice because all you can hear is nature. The dining tent is well equipped and provides a nice atmosphere for communal dining. There is a wonderful kopje behind the dining room to enjoy sundowners from and a great fire pit to enjoy after dinner. The food for breakfast, lunch and dinner were all wonderful and was the best food you will eat while in the bush. All of the staff are more than accommodating and really added to the relaxed atmosphere that Kusini offers. If you are looking for a first class place to relax, unwind and take in some beautiful scenery and wildlife this place is for you. It is well worth it.

Kusini Camp Luxury Hotel Accommodation
Secluded amongst the rocky outcrops of this private swathe of paradise, Kusini's twelve tents feature elevated terraces overlooking the Serengeti plains. Few properties pay homage to the surrounding environment with the same breathtaking effect as Kusini lodge, effortlessly ensuring an exclusive proximity to the Africa that you have come to see, far from the crowds that might be expected to throng to so unique a holiday destination.

Accommodation at kusini camp is offered in twelve double tents, each attended by a personal butler, which are scattered around the main Kopje. Private balconies with comfortable furnishings extend in front of each unit. The small size of the lodge provides for a very intimate and personal experience.  Each tent is spaced throughout the acacia trees at the bottom of a beautiful granite kopje to ensure complete privacy.

Describing the rooms as tents is probably misleading and a better description might be luxury cabins under canvas.  Regardless, the tents are elevated on a wooden foundation and each is tastefully decorated with hardwood furnishing in grand Africa safari fashion.  The back of the tent includes the en-suite bathroom which consists of a separate flush toilet and shower on either side of the wash basin.  Our favorite aspect of the lodge is the raised private veranda at the front of each tent.  It is possible to continue your safari experience after your game drive and enjoy the landscape and resident animals from the comfort and privacy of your own veranda.

Kusini Camp Restaurant
Excellent food and superb service are two of the hallmarks at Kusini Camp. Coffee and cookies will be delivered to your tent each morning at an agreed upon wake up call time. You may quietly enjoy the African morning before heading up to the main tent for breakfast. Breakfast is quite a spread and is served mixed buffet style. There is a selection of fresh fruit, cereals, cheeses and juices. Orders will be taken for eggs, pancakes, bacon sausages etc. and made to your liking. There are two choices with lunch. You can either drive back to the lodge for a hot lunch or have a private picnic lunch while on Tanzania safari. The lunch picnics are well catered to and include an assortment of pasta, sandwiches, cheeses and fresh fruit.

Dinner is the main event at Kusini Camp and it is quite a feast. Dinner consists of three or four courses including fine wines. The menu varies daily. There is a good variety of beer, wine and sprits available and most are included in your safari package. An hour before dusk on every day, a small bar is set up on the very top of a nearby kopje. You may indulge in sundowners with the other guests and enjoy the great views out over the surrounding woodlands. Just before dinner on each night, a campfire is also set up with appetizers and drinks

The dining area, lounge and library are housed in the main public area, which affords spectacular views from its wooden deck. Between definitive wildlife encounters and classic African adventures, you may gather for elegant candlelit meals and safari tales in the dining tent, have 'sundowner' cocktails or picturesque banquets atop a nearby kopje, or spend contemplative hours in the intimate library lounge, taking stock of what you have seen. The main lodge structure is set upon a kopje above the tents.
Watching Landscape from a rock top in Kusini Camp
This area includes the dinning tent, campfire, bar and main viewing deck.  The campfire and lounge area offer a great place to mingle with other guests and share the safari in Tanzania or the day.  For your safety, guards Askaris (Masai warriors) will accompany you at night when walking to and from the main lodge.

It is about a 5 minute walk to the main lodge facilities and it is important that you have an escort at night when going to and from dinner.  There is a very nice gift shop in a separate tent which includes among other things a very nice selection of Tanzanites

Electricity: the camp uses inverted electrical energy.
Children of all ages are welcome at Kusini. Children up to 2 years are free of charge. Children between 2 & 11 years will be required to share with an adult. A 50%

reduction off the adult sharing rate will be given to 1 child per full paying adult. This reduction is only applicable for children up to and including 11 years. A third and fourth child between 2 & 11 years will be required to pay the full adult rate.

Kusini Camp hotelActivities & Wildlife
The Serengeti Ecosystem is defined by the dominant annual wildebeest migration route and incorporates areas outside of park boundaries. The area around Kusini Camp is visited by the Migration between the months of January and April, but it should be noted that this is a grazing pattern and therefore experienced in the general area for this period. The season between January and March greets the arrival of newborn zebra and wildebeest calves. The park and the area around Kusini in particular, is noted for its lion and cheetah populations and excellent leopard sightings. Sites such as the nearby Moru Kopjes are also renowned for good resident game, particularly cats, all year round. The woodland area fringing the short grass plains, where Kusini is located, also has high sightings of resident game including some rarer species such as klipspringer, in addition to some incredible bird-life. Two game viewing drives daily in open-topped 4WD vehicles are included.

Climate & Clothing
Tanzania has a tropical climate, which is characterized by warm days and cool evenings. There is no winter here and the coolest months are June to September with average day temperatures of 18C-22C and night temperatures of 8C-15C. The hottest months are October to February with temperatures ranging between 22C-30C during the day and 15C-21C at night. Clothing should be cool, comfortable & casual all year round. Jerseys and heavier jackets are required in early mornings and evenings. Muted colours are the most suitable on safari and white does reflect the light, creating a glare. We advise long sleeves and long trousers due to the long grasses. Sturdy and comfortable shoes are essential. Laundry services are available.

Other Considerations
All communication in Kusini Tented Camp is relayed via radio. The camp maintains 24-hour radio contact with the Central Reservations Office in Arusha and all vehicles are equipped with two-way radios. In addition, all the tents are equipped with VHF radios to enable guests to contact the management in the event of an emergency. The camp is also equipped with a satellite telephone which guests have access to.

Health: Please consult your doctor and local travel advisor on health requirements for Tanzania. Inoculations for yellow fever are required if arrival is from or through countries where yellow fever is endemic. Malaria also exists in Tanzania and prophylaxis as advised by your doctor is required.

African safaris and Adventures client’s comments - Kusini camp just like all of Tanzania will always hold a special place in our hearts. The luxury camp is located an hour from the nearest "road" and if it is raining like it was when we were there, it provides for a safari in just trying to get there. This was our 3rd and 4th day in the Serengeti and we were lucky enough to see everything we thought we would and more over the first two days, so we were looking forward to chilling out for a couple of days.
