Loldia House

Loldia House photo

Loldia House Hotel is a luxury resort set in manicured lawns on the green shores of Lake Naivasha, the Great Rift Valley's highest and purest lake in Kenya. Loldia House was built during the Second World War and has breathtaking views of the dormant volcano, Mount Longonot. At Loldia House, you'll experience the life of Kenya's early settlers. The ranch house offers eight en suite double bedrooms, many with original furniture. Mouthwatering meals are served under Acacia trees or in the original dining room. Loldia hotel is ideally situated for visits to the diverse sanctuaries of the region. By foot or on horseback, guests can explore the farm's 6,500 acres where cattle graze among flocks of ostriches and herds of wild antelope such as waterbuck and impala.

There's also fishing and bird-watching on Lake Naivasha, and visits to nearby Hell's Date National Park with its spectacular canyons, hot springs and wildlife.
Loldia ranch was established by a family who trekked by ox-wagon from South Africa a century ago. Today their descendants still own the land. The original farmhouse is managed for visitors by Governors' Camps. It's an ideal spot to relax, taste the pleasures of Kenyan country life and explore the Great Rift Valley. Loldia House nestles under ancient Acacia trees with indigenous plants and flowers fill the gardens. Wild animals roam free on the farm. Small antelope wander through the gardens. In the evenings hippo munch quietly by the waterside. The lodge has kept the original character of the house: comfy chairs surround a huge fireplace; paintings by an artist who lives on the farm hang on the walls; a deep and shady veranda to relax on and sun beds in the garden.

Loldia House - Kenya

In the main house there's a choice of four en-suite double rooms, with original furniture. And three more rooms in the specially-built Loldia cottage which has it's own sitting-room, fire and panoramic lake-views. Mouth-watering meals, with fish and shrimp from the lake, are served under the trees or in the old dining room. Britain's Country Life Magazine even described Loldia's manager as "probably the best butler in the world". A piano and hot chocolate or coffee is brought to you at night after the evening meal - heaven! Because of the fear of a buffalo or hippo attack, you are not allowed to walk the 300 meters to the main house where meals were served, but there was always someone on hand to drive you, you can also hear the warthogs snorting outside the windows. The food is served either in the garden, where the monkeys watch you from the fantastic giant fig tree branches above your head in the hope of getting some food - the waiters have catapults at the ready and it is an ongoing battle between the 2 sides!-  or inside in the evening or in bad weather.

The whole house feels like a real home and Peter makes you feel like it is your home and you can do just whatever you want, although he is always ready to make suggestions. The food itself is excellent - Fantastic breakfast, 3 course lunches, tea and cakes then a 3 course meal in the evening!!! Everyone sits together on 2 long tables which is great as you get to exchange stories with your fellow guests and get tips from them as to what is and isn't worth seeing. The lawn of the house goes down to the lake and frequently you eating your meals watching Impala, Dik Diks, Waterbuck and even the dreaded loan Buffalo amble across the grass and at night time the hippos come up onto the lawn to graze - just amazing. While you are there, you may take a boat trip onto Lake Naivasha in a small 8 seater boat owned by the

Loldia Lodge, you spot hippos at first hand. A trip to Lake Nakuru to see the Flamingos is an absolute must, the sight and sound of the flamingos is unforgettable and there are many other animals there as well rhino, herds of buffalo, zebra, giraffes, hyena, lions, warthogs, leopard to name but a few.. There is an option to fly which is tempting but it is fascinating to drive through some of the countryside and villages on the way. Loldia House is a fabulous place to start your Kenya safari holiday.

Loldia House Hotel Accommodation

Loldia House Hotel Activities
Guests can walk and ride on the 6500 acres of Loldia ranch, on which impala and waterbuck graze amidst the cattle and ostrich herds. Game drives and night drives are on offer with Loldia’s resident naturalist, and boat trips are organised for fishing, bird-watching, sunsets – or the sheer pleasure of cruising. Loldia’s resident birding guide is available to take you birding on the lake or on a birding walk on the ranch.
Loldia will arrange 4WD trips to the soda lakes of Nakuru, Elementeita and Bogorio where flamingos mass to feed; and to Hell’s Gate National Park, with its dramatic gorge and hot springs (national park entrance fees & drinks to be paid separately). Hell’s Gate and Nakuru also offer good game-viewing.

Day trip to Lake Nakuru
One of the highlights whilst staying at Loldia House is a day trip to the picturesque Lake Nakuru National Park, which is world famous for it’s millions of colourful flamingoes and abundant rhino. Guests depart from Loldia after an early breakfast and enjoy a drive through the Rift Valley on their way to Lake Nakuru, which is approximately 2 hours from Loldia House. Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya’s smaller National Parks, yet it is one of the most beautiful. The park is abundant with a wide variety of wildlife, large numbers of rhino and millions of both Great and Lesser Flamingoes. Enjoy game viewing around the park in our specially designed 4wheel-drive Landrovers before choosing a shady spot for a sumptuous picnic lunch. Return to Loldia House for afternoon tea and delicious cakes, on the lawn overlooking Lake Naivasha. A day trip to Lake Nakuru is included in the overnight rate. Park fees, are to be paid direct at the park entrance gate.

Boat Trips & Bird watching
Lake Naivasha, at over 6,000 feet, is the highest lake in the Rift Valley and one of its most beautiful. Fringed by papyrus and with the extinct Mount Longonot as a backdrop, this is a wonderful place to watch and photograph birds. Over 400 species of birds have been seen in the Rift Valley, and Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and Hells Gate all offer great bird viewing opportunities.

At Loldia House we have a resident ornithologist and you can enjoy this wonderful bird life on foot, by boat around Lake Naivasha, horse riding around the ranch and on game drives. From boat trips on the lake you can get close to Cormorants drying their wings, Pink Backed Pelicans, Herons, colourful Kingfishers and Fish Eagles. Other birds seen around the lake include the Goliath Heron, Jacana, Great White Egret, White Fronted Bee-eater and the Saddle- billed Stork. Lake Nakuru is surrounded by Acacia woodland and open grassland, and millions of Greater and Lesser Flamingoes fringe the lake in shades of pink.
Guests are encouraged to visit the school adjacent to Loldia farm. Loldia School strives to educate 1400 children in its nursery and primary school classes and achieved fantastic examination results in 2004 and 2005. The Loldia School Fund is a UK charity that has sponsored the secondary education of over 100 Loldia House students, supplied books, desks and computers, and contributed to laying a pipeline to supply water to the school. Peter Njoroge of Loldia House is a director of the Loldia House Fund.
