Kenya Taking Measures to Tackle Poaching
Kenya Wildlife Service rangers have been deployed to patrol Lord Delamere's Soysambu Ranch to curb wildlife poaching. The 50,000-acre Soysambu Ranch which borders Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya is home to about 10,000 wild animals that have been attracting poachers. The warden in charge of the Lake Nakuru National Park, Mr. Charles Muthui confirmed to us on Saturday that he had dispatched several guards to assist the Soysambu guards. Lord Delamere's security officer said that poachers entered the ranch on Monday and killed a warthog but abandoned the carcass on being disturbed by guards."We managed to apprehend one of them but the rest disappeared into the bush,".
Some of the poachers sneaked into the vast ranch and set up snares targeting impalas and other antelopes. The various ranches in the area are set to benefit from aerial surveillance when the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) provides an aircraft to be stationed at the Lake Nakuru National Park which houses the offices of the regional assistant director and the senior warden in charge of the park. Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) director, Dr Julius Kipng'etich announced last week that each of the KWS regional offices would be provided with an aircraft. The one in Nakuru will be used for surveillance in the Central and Southern Rift Valley which has several protected parks, game reserves and thousands of animals in private ranches.
