Satao Rock Camp

Satao Rock Camp Hotel is situated on 98 000 acres of the Taita ranch on the border of Tsavo East National Park. It is the sister camp of Satao Safari Tented Camp, a luxury Mobile camp. Perched some 80 feet up on a huge rock kopje, the camp overlooks a small waterhole where animals come to drink water. Most days and nights silent herds of elephant come to the waterhole and by digging small wells in the soft sand they gain access to the water below. Their actions open up this scarce water source to other smaller animals. Satao Rock Camp – Taita Ranch is only one and a half hours from Mombass on the 98’000 acre Taita ranch on the border of Tsavo East National Park.The tents in Satao Rock have been constructed in true “Satao Safari Style”, all have en-suite facilities and flushing toilet. The tents at Satao Rock are perched high 80 feet above ground level and due to safety policies of the camp only children over the age of 12 are allowed.

Eight deluxe en-suite tents are built into the edge of a huge rock outcrop with views for as far as the eye can see. Mount Kilimanjaro is often spotted and it is more than 150 kilometres away! Due to the harsh nature of the terrain virtually no one lives in this area which is inhabited by thousands of animals who survive by knowing where to find water. The view of this amazing landscape and the populated water hole below will take your breath away. Your bathroom has hot and cold running water, electricity and flush toilets. The bar has a view that will not be forgotten and the chefs will do their best to ensure that their meals will give you as much pleasure as the view from the dining room. The waterhole below the bar is often visited by hundreds of elephants, buffalo and other plains game as well as lions, cheetah and leopard.

The birdlife is prolific and many of the species are unique to this part of the world. The policy of all hotel staff is to exceed your expectations in every part of your experience. The knowledge the tour guides have of the ranch gives the guests the best chance to see many of the various species of animals and birds that live in the area. The safari vehicles and guides in Satao Rock Camp Hotel are equipped to get you close to the animals for that perfect photo without disturbing it in its natural habitat. As this is a private conservation area we are permitted to do night game drives with powerful spotlights in an open vehicle. This gives you the opportunity to see lots of nocturnal animals not seen on a traditional safari within the national parks. We do morning game walks with a qualified guides and an armed Waliangulu tribesman whose ancestors have lived in this area since time immemorial as hunter gatherers.

Evening sundowners are a speciality of Satao Rock Lodge and we have many different places from where it is exceptionally pleasant to drink dawas and champagne as the sun goes down over Kasigau Mountain. A sight we are sure you will never forget.

SataoRock Camp is the most fantastic place to stay while on a safari in Kenya. The staff are very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. The tents are spotless and the beds really comfortable. You could be luxky enough to stay in the Sala tent which directly overlooks the watering hole and the wildife coming and going all day and night simply amazing.The whole experience is fantastic and you couldn’t ask for more. Tsavo National Park is the largest parks in the world. Wildlife in Tsavo East includes black rhino, hirola antelope, elephant, leopard, lion, mongoose, giraffe, Cape buffalo, bat-eared fox, hyrax, Grevy's zebra, ground pangolin, Sykes's monkey, black faced vervet monkey and dik dik to name a few. Over 500 species of bird have been recorded in the area including, ostrich, kestrel, starling, weaver bird, kingfisher, buzzard, hornbill, secretary bird and heron. The Kenyan Wildlife Service launched a relocation programme to gather animals in well protected sanctuaries where they can enhance their breeding chances. The tents are all brand new and are totally en-suite with the bathroom. Each tent has its own fridge and each verandah has a stunning view of all the surrounding mountains as well as the waterhole below the camp. The stunning beauty of the huge area that is viewed from the camp looks very similar to Laikipia except with more animals.
