Recommendations from others Travelers
Some of the best advice you will receive about a safari company in Kenya Tanzania Uganda is from people who have been on a Safari with them already. They can tell you exactly how the travel company performed and it's first hand information without any kind of marketing agenda. This is a great way to create a shortlist of Uganda safari companies so if you know anyone who has been on safari to Uganda before ask them about it. But what if you don't know someone who has been on Uganda safari before? No problem. There are dozens of travel websites on the internet that list Uganda safari trip reports and travel diaries written by the people who have previously gone on safaris holidays to Uganda themselves. Find them and learn from them. The tips and recommendations you can glean there are very valuable for your own trip. Note: Some Tour operators will write articles and fake recommendations on travel websites purporting to be from real travelers.
Check their credentials
The next thing you need to do is check the credentials of the safari company you are planning to use to make sure they are reputable. To do your own research here is the process to follow, Membership in safari associations like the Kenya Association of Tour Operators KATO, Tanzania Association of Tour Operators SATSA, Uganda Tourism Association and Tours and Safari Association of Namibia, doesn’t guarantee that a tour company is reputable, Membership of these tourism associations is based on annual subscription and corruption charges have rocked Uganda association of tour operators.
Ask the right questions
So you have a safari company in Uganda in mind and you've done a little research to find out more about them and now it's time to book Uganda safari tour. What questions do you need to ask to make sure you are going to get the best value for your money? Find out how many other people there will be on your Uganda safari trip. Some of the travel companies in Uganda can be guilty of trying to cram too many people into the safari vehicle and that can become unpleasant.
A) And ask about their payment policies, some Uganda tour companies place the client’s money in the back or finishing their unfinished projects instead of paying for hotels accommodations
B) Make sure they explain their cancellation and refund policy to you clearly and the timing of reservations and payments that need to be made.
C) Do staff members regularly travel to Africa, especially to parts where their Uganda safari tours are conducted? "It's a surprising—even frightening—fact that many of the tour agents advising clients on visiting Africa have never been there
D) Does the safari Uganda company use a variety of accommodations (tented camps, lodges, or hotels), or must they use ones they have contracts with? Many travelers to the African bush spend serious cash—safaris can cost $2,000 or more, though prices vary from Uganda safari operator to safari operator. So pick a flexible company that can grant your wishes.
E) Are they open to making customized Africa safaris based on your travel needs? Since a safari to Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most, be sure to get exactly what you want. There are hundreds of Uganda Safaris itineraries out there, but if they don't meet your criteria, then design your own.
F) Do they accept credit cards? And if they do, is the credit card machine registered by the Uganda tour operator’s name. Some companies don't. "A policy of non-acceptance of credit cards should raise a big red flag,"
G) How long has the Uganda safaris company been in business? An indication of a solid track record is a company that's been around for at least ten years,
H) Does the operator use your dollars to benefit the local economy and protect the local environment? Conservation efforts in Africa are slowly improving, especially when local people receive the benefits of nature tourism. You can help by choosing safari operators that hire and train local people, support local operations such as schools and conservation programs, give you the chance to buy local crafts and other products, and take care not to harm the environment.
I) most people book safaris to Uganda with a private guide, but some opt for a group experience. Keep groups small, "The people in the first vehicle see game, while those in the safari vehicle behind eat dust," he says. Go with no more than six or eight people. Booking privately does not necessarily mean greater cost. "A private group of four or more can often travel with us for the same price as a group of 16 or 20."

Hiking the snow capped Rwenzoris is one of the most interesting adventures safaris in Uganda. Famed in ancient times as the mountains of the moon, running along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Rwenzori Mountains have now been developed and opened to travelers interested in mountain climbing safari. Well-known for its stupendous mountain scenery, traversing up through bamboo forests into the mighty amphitheater of the Magherita Peak is a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience that cannot be easily attained elsewhere in Africa!. The Rwenzoris offer some exceptional walking to both trekkers at lower altitudes as well as mountaineers who would like to meet the challenge of ascending to the glacial peaks of over 5100 metres. In the eastern part of Uganda, Mt. Elgon with its caldera is quite another interesting mountain hiking destination. It is ideal for both medium and high climbers.
Uganda Gorilla Safari - Uganda’s star attraction is the endangered Mountain gorilla tracking safari, the bulkiest of living primate, and among the most peaceable. Staring into the pensive brown eyes of these gentle giants is as humbling as it is thrilling. George Schaller famously stated that "No one who looks into a gorilla's eyes – intelligent, gentle, vulnerable – can remain unchanged, for the gap between ape and human vanishes, we know that the gorilla still lives with in us" Captain Robert van Beringe was the first western person to “discover” a mountain gorilla while on a Gorilla safari in Uganda in 1902. With approximately 50% of the world’s mountain gorilla population, it’s easy to see why we call Uganda the ‘Land of the Mountain Gorillas ’. The best place in all of Uganda to witness the mountain gorilla is Bwindi National Park. Bwindi is very heavily forested so it is wise to be prepared for some tough mountain gorilla trekking, but it will all be worth it as soon as you catch your first glimpse of these amazing animals. The other park that is inhabited by a mountain gorilla troop is the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. However this park is at the confluence of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda and the troops range can take them into these other countries. A Gorilla Safari to Uganda ranks among the top world class adventures in the
wild, With the existence of very few remaining gorillas (both lowland and mountain gorillas) in the wild of Africa, meeting the endangered apes from the wild is one of the long lasting life experience one can get on his journey through the gorilla destinations in Africa. A Gorilla Safari Africa offers you the opportunity to meet the endangered mountain gorillas from Uganda, Rwanda or Congo as well as the low land gorillas from either Congo or Gabon. Unlike in the past where conflicts did not favour gorilla safaris to be taken in Africa, today many African Countries such as Uganda and Rwanda are politically stable - thus being safe gorilla travel destinations. With us on the ground, we study and report on-time security and safety situation in these African Countries and we will never encourage any one to travel to any gorilla tour safari destination where security and safety are not guaranteed. Our 2011 and 2012 Gorilla Tour Safaris program is a selection of the best ever guided active gorilla adventure tour safaris packages for small groups wishing to travel to Uganda or Rwanda. These gorilla safari vacations are combinations of not only tracking the famous apes but also include sightseeing, game viewing in the beautiful national parks in Uganda and Rwanda as well as other activities in and around the tourism destinations you visit. Uganda Chimpanzee Safari is an exciting safari option - especially at Chambura Gorge and Kibale Forest in the west and Budongo and Kanyiyo Pabidi near Murchison Falls; they are also found in the huge afro-montane forest of Nyungwe in Rwanda. Bwindi Forest is one of the few forests where gorillas and chimps co-exist but here they are rarely seen, Bwindi offers a perfect combination of Gorilla Chimpanzee Safaris The Uganda and Rwanda variety (Pan Troglodytes Schweinfurthi) is long-haired and lives in those forests where there is a rich, all year round food supply. Chambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth NP is worth a morning’s walk - both for the chance to track chimpanzees and also the fabulous bird life to be found there. Whilst chimpanzee safari sightings are not as regular or 'guaranteed' this is definitely a worthwhile adventure... Kibale Forest has thirteen species of primates - among the highest number recorded in an African forest - including the chimpanzee, the vervet monkey and the red colobus. Tracking the noisy chimpanzee families racing through this verdant forest is a thrilling experience. Budongo and Kanyiyo Pabidi in Murchison Falls NP contain one of the most extensive mahogany forests in East Africa, and the region's largest chimpanzee population - about 900 animals. Chimp tracking safari is available either at Busingiro, in the south of Budongo, or at Kanyiyo Pabidi on the road to Murchison. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary,
about a 45-minute speedboat ride from Entebbe, or alternatively 1-2 hours by ssese canoe! This 100 acre forested island provides a safe haven for over 30 orphaned chimps that are now free to roam the island thanks to project leaders Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) and other concerned organizations who raised funds for the project. It offers a unique opportunity for close viewing of chimpanzees in their natural environment. Pre-arranged supplementary feeding times (11.00am & 2.30pm each day) brings the chimpanzees to within metres of the raised walkway specially designed for easy viewing. Also available are half day, full day and overnight visits to Ngamba Island. The overnight trips include the opportunity to assist with the bedtime and early morning feeding routine of the chimpanzees. Guests are accommodated in spacious walk-in two man tents, meals are provided. Kibale National Park contains one of the loveliest and most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda. This is home to a host of forest wildlife, most famously 13 species of primate including chimpanzee. Forest cover predominates in the northern and central parts of the park on the elevated Fort Portal plateau. Kibale is highest at the park's northern tip which stands 1590m above sea level. Northern Kibale is also the wettest area, receiving a mean annual rainfall of up to 1700mm, mostly during March-May and September-November. Read More
Bwindi Gorilla Safari
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a famous gorilla safari destination in Africa for gorilla safaris. Given the fact that the forest protects more than half of the remaining gorilla population, the forest has become of great mountain gorilla conservation value in Africa. Bwindi was first gazzetted as a forest Reserve in 1942 and later upgraded to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in 1992 and recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1994. In the local Lukiga language, Bwindi actually means 'Impenetrable.' This double warning is apt, for Bwindi is all but impenetrable; 327km2 of tangled vegetation draped over a deeply fissured landscape of steep, slippery valleys and high, draughty ridges. A Gorilla trek through this, one of Africa's most ancient rainforests, in search of the endangered mountain gorilla, ranks among the world's premier wildlife encounters. Bwindi can be cold especially in the morning and at night. The annual average temperature range is 7°C - 20°C with the coldest period being June and July. On your Bwindi safari, warm clothing is required, plus wet weather gear since Bwindi receives up to 2390mm of rain/ year. This is concentrated during two wet seasons, short rains in March-May and heavy rains in September-November. The most recent census of mountain gorillas in Uganda Bwindi Impenetrable National Park--one of only two places in the world where the rare gorillas exist--has found gorilla population has increased by 8 percent since the last census in 2006, according to the Uganda Wildlife Authority and its great news gorilla conservation agents working to protect Bwindi and its gorilla population. According to the census, which also successfully used for the first time genetic samples from fecal specimens, Bwindi gorilla population now numbers 340 individual gorillas, up from 320 in 2002 and 300 in 1997. Bwindi is also
home to a thriving gorilla ecotourism program that generates revenue for Uganda by bringing tourists to Uganda for mountain gorillas safaris tours. The other mountain gorilla stronghold is located just south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the Virunga Volcanoes on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The last census of the Virunga gorilla population in 2003 revealed 380 gorillas, up from 324 individuals counted in the previous census in 1989. Virungas' mountain gorillas are persisting as well, thanks to sustained conservation efforts by the guards and staff members within that landscape. The current total of mountain gorillas at both locations brings the worldwide tally to approximately 720 individual animals. Gorilla permits must be arranged for, and paid for, in advance. Each Uganda and Rwanda gorilla park has a specified number of gorilla permit that it is authorized to issue, as well as a separate set of procedures and tariffs governing those gorillas permits. Once issued, gorillas permit is non-refundable except for medical reasons. Visitors should remain aware that even previously-issued gorilla viewing permits can be denied or revoked at short notice, often due to national park or border closures, security changes or movement of the gorillas out of range. In such circumstances, refunds are at the discretion of the issuing authorities and are not within the tour company's control. Obtaining a gorilla permit should therefore be viewed not as a guarantee of seeing a gorilla, but as a hard-won privilege. In order to protect the gorilla populations from disease, no children under 15 or people with illnesses may go on gorilla tracking safari. Visits to the gorillas are limited to one hour, and visitors may not approach closer than 5 meters (15 feet) to the gorillas. Flash photography is not allowed, so fast film is useful. Read More

Mount Elgon is one of Uganda's interesting parks for Uganda mountain climbing and hiking safaris. A Mount Elgon Mountain Climbing Safari is to explore a magnificent and uncluttered montane wilderness without the summit-oriented approach common to higher regional mountains. Indeed the ultimate goal on reaching the top of Mount Elgon is not the final ascent to the 4321 m Wagagai peak, but the descent into the vast 40km2 caldera. Mount Elgon is a massive solitary volcanic mountain on the border of eastern Uganda and western Kenya. Its vast form, eighty kilometers in diameter, rises 3070m above the surrounding plains, providing welcome relief in more than one sense of the word. Its mountainous terrain introduces variety to an otherwise monotonous regional landscape. Its cool heights offer respite for humans from the hot plains below and its higher altitudes provide a refuge for flora and fauna. Mount Elgon has been a regional landmark for a long time: this extinct volcano is one of Uganda's oldest physical features, first erupting around 20 million years ago. It was once Africa's highest mountain, towering above Kilimanjaro's 5895m. Millennia of erosion have reduced its height to 4321 m, relegating it to 4th highest peak in East Africa (and 7th on the continent). However, its 4000km2 surface area is still the largest base of any volcanic mountain worldwide. Read More
